2000 Science Fairs

Volunteers are now being solicited to represent the Washington Statistical Society as judges in local area science fairs next spring. The WSS sponsors awards at fairs in Northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and the District of Columbia. Since 1986, WSS has provided special awards at these fairs to students whose projects demonstrate excellence in statistical theory or application. Those who have participated in this activity have very much enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the students and to observe the widely diverse projects which are presented. The fairs are held on a Saturday morning in mid-March to mid-April. The only time required is that one Saturday morning, plus one weekday lunchtime meeting to discuss judging strategy and to distribute the awards to be given out at each fair.

If you would like to be a WSS science fair judge next spring, please e-mail Lee Abramson at <lxa@nrc.gov> by January 21, and include your work and home phone numbers and your mailing address. (Please contact Lee even if you judged last year, as he needs your current e-mail address.) If you do not have access to e-mail or have any questions, please call Lee at 301-415-6180.

New FCSM Web Site

FCSM has a new Web site! Check it out www.fcsm.gov!!!

The Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology (FCSM) is an interagency committee dedicated to improving the quality of Federal statistics. FCSM's goals include communicating and disseminating information on statistical practice among all Federal statistical agencies; recomending the introduction of new methodologies in Federal statistical programs to improve data quality; and provideing a mechanism for statisticians in different Federal agencies to meet and exchange ideas.

Two ways FCSM carries out its mission is through FCSM-sponsored seminars(the latest of which was held Nov. 15-17 in Roslyn, VA); and the FCSM Statistical Policy Working Paper series.

Postdoctoral Program

The Bureau of Labor Statistics and the U.S. Census Bureau announce a program of postdoctoral research in statistics, mathematics, information science, computer science, statistical computing, sociology, demography, economics, and social and behavioral science. SIGSTAT for December, 1999

SIGSTAT, the Special Interest Group in Statistics for CPCUG & WINFORMS, has resumed its monthly meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. All meetings are at 12:30 in Waugh A, 1800 M St, NW. See See www.econ.ag.gov/sigstat/ for directions to the meetings and a current schedule. First time attendees should contact Charlie Hallahan at 202-694-5051 or hallahan@econ.ag.gov and leave their name for inclusion on the list left at the guard's desk.

On December 8 the topic is PC/TSP.

TSP is a language for the estimation and simulation of econometric models. Although TSP was originally and continues to be developed primarily by economists, there is nothing in its design limiting it to economic time series. Any data consisting of repeated observations of the same variable for different units may be analyzed with TSP.
