The Roger Herriot award is sponsored by the Washington Statistical Society, the Social Statistics Section of American Statistical Association (ASA) and the Government Statistics Section of ASA. Roger Herriot was the Associate Commissioner of Statistical Standards and Methodology at the National Center for Educational Statistics before he died in 1994. Throughout his career in the Federal statistical system, Roger Herriot developed unique approaches to the solution of statistical problems in Federal data collection programs. Tom Jabine truly exemplifies this tradition.
Please join the Washington Statistical Society on Wednesday October 13, 1999 at 12:30 p.m. to honor Tom as we present the award to him and celebrate in a reception following the award. The presentation is in room 2990 (the cognitive laboratory conference room), Bureau of Labor Statistics Building, 2 Massachusetts Ave., N.E. For those planning to attend who are not Federal government employees, please call 202-606-7524 by Friday afternoon October 8, to get have your name placed on a list of attendees for the guards. The BLS building is adjacent to Union Station and the Union Station metro stop on the red line.
The ninth Morris Hansen Lecture will be presented by David F. Findley. Since 1980, Dr. Findley has been a principle researcher for time series analysis at the U.S. Census Bureau, where he is responsible for research in the development and application of time series methods, particularly for seasonal adjustment. Under his leadership, the Bureau's time series staff has developed the X-12-ARIMA seasonal adjustment program, building on the work of Julius Shiskin, Estella Bee Dagum, and others. During this time, he has also been a visiting professor or research fellow at various universities and institutes throughout the world. He was awarded the Department of Commerce Gold Medal in 1997, and the Julius Shiskin Award sponsored by the Washington Statistical Society and the National Association of Business Economists in 1996. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, and has more than 40 published articles, most dealing with various aspects of time series analysis or model selection.
