Note from the President
June 11th, 2001 is WSS President's Day. We are honoring a former WSS President - Sam Greenhouse (president in 1967-68) - as well as research in areas of interest to many past WSS presidents from the federal statistical agencies. There are two WSS events planned for Monday June 11th the conference in honor of Sam Greenhouse to be held at NIH (sponsored by WSS, GWU, and NIH) and the Funding Opportunity in Survey Research to be held at BLS (sponsored by WSS Methodology and WSS Data Collection Sections and AAPOR-DC).
2001 Annual Dinner
The WSS Annual Dinner will be held Tuesday, June 19, at China Garden Restaurant in Rosslyn. Please see the dinner announcement for details and a reservation form.This is a great opportunity to join with friends, meet colleagues, and make new acquaintances!

Mid-Atlantic Probability and Statistics Day

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of American University is pleased to sponsor the 2001 Mid-Atlantic Probability and Statistics Day, Saturday, April 21, 2001 on the campus of American University, 4400 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20016.
As an experiment we will offer a different format from the past. We hope that it will be well received, and in time encompass all of the Mid-Atlantic area universities. We will extend to the department chairs of several local area universities invitations to nominate one of their faculty to submit a special half-hour invited presentation showcasing that faculty member's research. It is hoped that this will enable us all to better understand the various departments and programs and their focus.
We know that many more faculty will want to share their research results with colleagues, so we have also scheduled time for contributed papers of 15 minutes each. These contributions are welcome from all, with the understanding that we may have to limit the number of talks. We will consider abstracts up to April 14,2001

Sam Greenhouse Memorial Symposium
June 11, 2001, Bethesda, MD
The George Washington University Biostatistics Center, the Washington Statistical Society and the National Institutes of Health will jointly sponsor a one-day symposium to celebrate the scientific contributions and career of Dr. Samuel Greenhouse; former NIH scientist and GWU Professor. This symposium will feature speakers from various time periods in Dr. Greenhouse's career covering the diverse and exciting facets of statistics, epidemiology, clinical trials, consultant and mentor in which he served. Speakers presently committed include Joel Greenhouse, John Lachin, LJ Wei, Gordon Lan, Jim Dambrosia, Dan Seigel, Howard Hoffman, Mitchell Gail, Raymond Bain, Paul Meier, Marvin Zelen, Seymour Geisser, and Scott Zeger, The symposium will be held on Monday, June 11, 2001, preceded by a cocktail hour and dinner with speakers on Sunday evening, June 10, 2001. Both events will be held in the Bethesda, Maryland area. More details about the program and the registration form for both events will be forthcoming on the GWU Biostatistics Center website http://www.bsc.gwu.edu. Attendance will be limited and all who plan to attend must be registered by the date indicated on the form.
Herriot Award Nominations Sought
Nominations are sought for the 2001 Roger Herriot Award for Innovation in Federal Statistics.After the sudden death in May 1994 of Roger Herriot, an Associate Commissioner for Statistical Standards and Methodology at the National Center for Education Statistics, the Washington Statistical Society, the Social Statistics and Government Statistics Sections of the American Statistical Association established an award in his memory to recognize individuals who develop unique approaches to the solution of statistical problems in Federal data collection programs.
The award is intended to reflect the special characteristics that marked Roger Herriot's career: dedication to the issues of measurement; improvements in the efficiency of data collection programs; and improvements and use of statistical data or policy analysis.
The award is not restricted to senior members of an organization; nor is it to be considered as a culmination of a long period of service. Individuals at all levels, from entry to senior, Federal employees, private sector employees, or employees of the academic community, may be nominated on the basis of the significance of the specific contribution.

April SIGSTAT
The April SIGSTAT meeting will meet on Wednesday, April 11, at 12:30 in Waugh A, 1800 M St. NW. The topic is "SAS Release 8." Linda Atkinson will make the presentation. Topics to be included in the demonstration are the new Enhanced Editor, statistical and econometric additions, and features introduced with Version 7, such as long names and the Explorer window.
